What is a good house wine?

In a restaurant we like to drink a glass of good house wine, but what makes a wine a good house wine?

This subject was debated on Tuesday afternoon at the Inspiration Square of Gastvrij Rotterdam. A good thing, because even better house wine is never gone.

Average house wines
Only 2.8 percent of restaurant visitors rate the quality of Dutch house wine as good. 73.6 percent think the quality is average. The rest rate the quality of house wines as poor.

The debate showed that we find the following things important in a house wine:

1. The employees must know from which country or which region the house wine comes. In addition, he or she must be able to open the bottle and know how to hold a wine glass.

2. The house wine must be adapted to seasonal influences. This means that a different house wine must be offered at least twice a year.

3. A minimum of two house wines or open wines must be offered.

4. A nice glass contributes to the experience of drinking wine.

5. The house wine does not have a high alcohol percentage and is easily digestible.

6. 33.3 percent think that sustainability or an organic wine is of added value.
