14 Ingredients You Never Use Up – And How To Do It

Are you against food waste, but sometimes you really don't know what to do with your leftovers? These ingredients are often ingredients that you do not use up, but that you can easily use in the kitchen. How? We are happy to tell you!

1. Bread

Sprinkle dry bread with water or steam it in the oven before turning this leftover into garlic bread. You can also crumble the leftovers to use in oven dishes, baking or to make croutons. Don't forget that you can also freeze bread to use later!

2. Carrots

Everyone has them, but can you finish them all? Grate them and use them in your oatmeal with some cinnamon for a delicious breakfast. You can also keep some as a snack, or roast them and use them in hummus or smoothies.

3. Cauliflower

Do you have leftover cauliflower? Then turn it into a dip or puree in no time. You can also combine the cauliflower with chickpeas and olive oil for a nice snack. You can also roast the cauliflower florets for easy dipping.

4. Cheese

Cheese is too good a leftover to throw away! What can you do with it? Process them in soups and pastas for a taste sensation. You can use feta, for example, in dips or casseroles, and you can grill halloumi for vegetable skewers. A tip for when people come by? Make it a fondue!

5. Zucchini

You can also do a lot with zucchini. Grate your zucchini for a salad or grill zucchini slices for a wrap. Make a dip with tahini, garlic, lemon and beans or combine them with tomatoes for a simple vegetable frittata.

6. Cucumber

A healthy vegetable that you can use for anything. Whether you use it for your own lunch or as a party snack, the cucumber always comes in handy. Grate it and use yogurt and garlic to make tzatziki. You can also make boats out of it; Top them with smoked salmon and cream cheese or with hummus and olives. And have you ever made cucumber bows for drinking straws? Fancy, but oh so simple…

7. Hummus

What a shame is it to throw away hummus? For example, use that last bit in noodles, soups or stews for a creamy kick. You can also use hummus perfectly as a dip, dressing or base for tasty wraps – your pick.

8. Milk

Do you have any leftover milk? Pour a dash into your tea to make Chai Latte or freeze milk for later use in dishes such as scrambled eggs, stew or smoothies.

9. Onions

Try caramelizing onions and turn them into a side dish or an ideal base for gravy. You can also use them in salads, frittatas or pastas. Fortunately, freezing is also an option!

10. Parsnip

Not sure what to do with your leftover parsnips? You can make chips with it for your main course. Not a fan of chips? Parsnips also work very well as a puree! And if you're looking for something completely different, grate them into a soup or use them in a cake.

11. Peppers

You can use peppers to literally spice up any meal. Use raw peppers in salsas and salads or in tomato sauce, stir-fries, stews, curries and chili sauces for a flavor boost. Peppers are also perfect for dips!

Pesto can be used in more meals than just pasta. Spread a little on fish or chicken before baking or grilling for some extra flavor. Did you know that pesto is also delicious with yogurt, hummus or risotto for a nice kick? And with a drop of oil, your pesto can also be sprinkled over a soup or stew – plenty of options!

Radishes also serve perfectly as serving boats:cut them in half and use them as a base. You can also grate or finely chop them for a dip with yogurt, garlic, salt and mint, or raw for a crunch in your salads. You don't have to throw away the green of the radishes either, because they have a nice taste for salads or in a pesto or salsa verde.

14. Tomatoes

Tomatoes are the most common leftovers, but that doesn't mean you have to throw them away. Whether raw or baked, you can use them in salads, salsas, bolognese sauce or in a pasta sauce with other roasted vegetables. Of course you can also make your own ketchup.
