4 Things You Eat Every Day That Are Probably Expired

How well do you pay attention to the shelf life of the products you eat? Even if you watch it like a hawk, there is still a good chance that you eat products that are actually past their expiry date. Fortunately, this is not always as bad, but it is wise to pay close attention, especially with certain products. Are you also curious which ones they are? Then read on quickly!

1. Herbs and spices

Of course your trusty cumin powder and coriander won't make you sick, but unfortunately the taste will go off if you have them in your spice rack for too long. That is of course a shame, because we use the herbs and spices for exactly the opposite:adding flavour! Unfortunately, they lose their taste after a while and that is faster than you probably think... Often the best-before date of these products is about three years, but the taste goes away much earlier. Are you sure you have spices that burst with flavor? Buy fresh spices instead of ground spices:these are less exposed to oxygen and therefore taste better for longer.

2. Meat products

You have to be careful with meat products, because using them for too long is not good for your health. Because the meat products are packed in plastic, we often have the idea that we can eat them longer than is actually the case. In fact, most meats are best eaten three days after you buy them. You can still safely eat the meats for about a week after purchasing, but if it smells different than you're used to or starts to look a bit more slimy, it's better to throw them in the trash right away. So pay attention!

3. Garlic

Since we have to store garlic in a dry, cool and dark place in the kitchen cupboard, we sometimes forget how long the garlic has actually been there. In itself this should not be a problem, because a … garlic lasts up to six months. Garlic cloves, on the other hand, can be stored for up to three weeks and even as little as a week if they are already peeled. Chopped garlic isn't good even after a few hours unless you drizzle olive oil over it. Are green stalks sprouting from your garlic? Better throw it away, because it won't improve the taste and neither will your carefully prepared meal...

4. Bread

You probably don't realize it, but often you eat your bread after the expiration date. Usually bread is not quite good before it becomes visible. Fortunately, it doesn't hurt much to just keep eating your bread, but if it starts to smell different or you see small mold spots, then it's really time to throw it away. Has your bread just become a bit dry? Then you can also use it for salads in the form of croutons or for soups and casseroles in the form of crumbs. Of course you can also take a smart approach and freeze parts of your bread, because that also keeps the shelf life longer.
