5 ways to bake even better banana bread

Have you also dived into the kitchen to pick up baking again? Then a tasty and (semi-)healthy banana bread was probably already on your list! With these 5 tips you ensure that your banana bread becomes even tastier and better. Are you up for the challenge?

1. Use ripe – but not too ripe – bananas

Preferably bananas with a yellow skin with brown specks here and there. In other words, no green skin and no brown bananas. As bananas ripen, they become sweeter and softer, making your banana bread smoother. So it's a bit of a wait for the perfect bananas, but it's worth it!

2. Be precise when measuring and mixing

Both the wet ingredients (such as butter, eggs, milk, vanilla and bananas) and the dry ingredients (flour, salt, sugar and baking powder) should be mixed well together to get the best creamy and airy texture. Do you really want to be able to bake a perfect bread? Then make sure to measure all ingredients (especially the flour) properly to keep exactly the right proportions. It can also help to let your butter come to room temperature before mixing it with the other ingredients to get the dough airy. Practice makes perfect!

3. Experiment with different types of sugar and flour

Most recipes you will find will use a combination of brown sugar and white sugar. Are you a fan of darker and richer bread? Use a little more brown sugar than white sugar. The same goes for flour:white flour is most common, but you can also use cake flour for a lighter loaf. If you want more nutrients in your bread, you can also go for multigrain flour or a combination of white flour and wheat. This will also make the bread a bit firmer. Your choice!

4. Make sure you don't overmix the dough

Yes, it is important that you mix the ingredients well. But it is important that you do not overmix them. As tempting as it may be, mixing your dough too long and too much can make your bread too hard. If you mix the dry and wet ingredients together, it is therefore useful to make a small well in the center of your dry mixture and pour your wet ingredients into it. Then, using a rubber spatula or spoon, gently fold the ingredients together until the flour is slightly damp. Are there still some lumps in the batter? Then resist the urge to knock them out violently, but try to make them smaller with your spatula.

5. Go wild with the toppings

You can only make your banana bread really tasty if you get creative with the toppings. For example, choose a crunchy nut, such as walnuts, and toast them lightly before adding them to the batter. You can also, of course, process pieces of chocolate or fruit (such as blueberries and raspberries) through the batter. Fold them in carefully, just like in the step above, to avoid overmixing.
