What should you pay attention to when choosing non-alcoholic beer?

Non-alcoholic beer is becoming increasingly popular. This way you can still enjoy the taste of beer, without your body having to endure much. But one non-alcoholic beer is not the same. What should you pay attention to?

1. Watch out for sugars

Radler is beer with added soft drinks. The non-alcoholic version contains 30 calories per 100 ml:quite a lot compared to a normal non-alcoholic beer. In addition, sugary drinks are bad for your teeth and increase the risk of diabetes and obesity. So it's better to leave it alone or stick to one.

2. Check the alcohol content

A number of non-alcoholic beers contain some alcohol, about 0.1 percent. In some countries this can be as much as 0.5 percent. Not super harmful, but important to know. If it says 0.0 percent on the bottle or can, you know for sure that there is no alcohol in it.

3. Compare the calories

There are also quite significant differences in nutritional value between the different types of non-alcoholic beer. For example, a Budweiser without alcohol contains 15.5 calories per 100 ml, while Sportzot from Brouwerij De Halve Maan
41 calories per 100 ml count.

Healthier than 'normal' beer

Is non-alcoholic beer healthier than beer with alcohol? Yes. Alcohol contains a lot of calories:about 7 per gram. A 33 cl can of beer is good for about 139 calories, while a can of non-alcoholic beer contains about 70 calories - so that's a big difference. Alcohol-free beer is also said to be healthy because it contains many vitamins and minerals (such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and vitamin B). Alcohol-free beer also contains polyphenols, which counteract inflammation. These substances are healthy, but it is better not to get them exclusively from alcohol-free beer, says the Nutrition Center. They are already in everyday foods such as fruits and vegetables, and you don't need them extra. If you want a really healthy drink, then water, tea and coffee are the best choices.

Alcohol-free beer or soft drink?

As far as sugars are concerned, an alcohol-free beer is better than a glass of soft drink. Both orange and cola contain about 11 grams of sugars, while non-alcoholic beer contains about 6 grams of sugars. Moreover, the sugars in beer come from natural ingredients such as barley and hops. They are added to soft drinks, so they are less healthy. However, there is a catch:some non-alcoholic beers are not healthier than soft drinks. Radler, for example, contains much more sugar than regular non-alcoholic beer, because fruit juice has been added.

Nice after exercise

Rather have an alcohol-free beer after exercise than a 'regular' beer:at least you don't drink the calories you just burned right away. And there is another advantage:non-alcoholic beer contains potassium, natural carbohydrates and vitamin B, substances that help to replenish your energy supply after a hard workout. In addition, alcohol-free beer is isotonic, so that water, carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins are quickly absorbed by your body. In short:your thirst is quenched and recovery begins immediately.
