The benefits of eating seasonal vegetables

Nowadays you can buy the same fruits and vegetables all year round. It seems as if there are no more seasons. Nevertheless, there are many advantages to choosing vegetables and fruits that are homegrown and seasonal. Why? You can read it here.

Effective for your wallet

Let's start with the cost. When the product is local in season, it costs less. Think, for example, of strawberries in the winter that easily cost around 5 euros per container, compared to 2 euros in the summer.

It's the taste that counts

For most of us, the taste of the food we buy is just as important as the cost, if not more. When the food is not locally in season, it is either grown in a greenhouse or imported from other parts of the world, and both affect the taste.

It is environmentally friendly

Locally grown products do not have to be imported from far. All the imported fruit and vegetables cause high CO2 emissions. Heated greenhouses are also not exactly good for the environment.

It's healthy

Of course you want the fruits and vegetables on your plate to be as fresh as possible. However, fruits and vegetables from other countries have a long way to go. This is disastrous for the taste and nutritional value:vitamins are systematically lost from the moment of harvest. So less healthy than you think!

All year round variety

Many people are surprised to find that a wide variety of crops are harvested in the fall and winter, such as apples, potatoes, grapes, mushrooms, pumpkin and spinach. We like to associate summer with lettuce, corn, peaches, cucumbers, tomatoes, etc. Eating seasonal products gives you variety all year round.
